Nicholas’ work illustrates a sustained interest in romantic, landscape and rural motifs, a course of inquiry with a strong focus on German and British Romanticism and aesthetic theory. His work aims to explore and knowingly describe the problem of working with classical motifs in a contemporary context. Recalling references as diverse as the Dutch Masters and Mallarmé in their themes of decay and history, the works require the viewer to penetrate their richly textured surface to reveal the many layers beneath.
